Daily Terror Breakdown
Week 1: Stephen King's The Shining

The shining is about a young boy named Danny Torrence who has supernatural psychic powers and an imaginary friend he calls Tony.
The book opens with Jack (now a struggling writer) getting a job as the caretaker for the Overlook Hotel. The owner tells Jack of the mysterious massacre that occurred in the Overlook Hotel; the last caretaker, Delbert Grady, went mad and murdered his family and then committed suicide. Jack assures him that it won’t happen with him.

Once the family get to the hotel they are given a tour, and  Danny meets a friendly old man named Dick Halloran. Dick Halloran actually shares the same gift, and tells Danny that The Shining is only given to those who have been abused at an early age.

Once the Torrence’s get settled in, creepy and gruesome events unfold. Jack begins having night terrors of killing his family, and Danny starts seeing visions of what is soon to come. Meanwhile, Wendy is forced to fend for herself in the god forsaken Overlook Hotel.
Soon Jack has no choice but to give in to the spirits of the Overlook Hotel. While this is happening Danny keeps seeing the two daughters of Delbert Grady, and his imaginary friend Tony has begun to take over his mind. Danny begins to repeat the phrase REDRUM which backwards spells murder.

While all this is happening, Wendy finds her husband, however something is terribly wrong with Jack. Jack has been taken over by the hotel’s spirits, and attacks his wife.

Halloran, who has arrived to save Danny, is also attacked by Jack. Like Wendy, Halloran lives, but is severely injured in the process.
When Danny becomes aware of Halloran’s presence in the hotel and tries to go after him but then finds himself outside and is then attacked by the hedge animals in front of the hotel. He escapes unscathed and retreats into the hotel, where he is chased by his father.
Danny escapes his father and is found by his mother Wendy and Dick Halloran. The three of them find Jack in the boiler room, attempting to right off the spirits that have taken him over. Jack tells them to get out of the hotel, and as they rush out of the Overlook Hotel it explodes into flames. Danny, Wendy and Halloran escape with their lives. Although Jack did died, he found redemption within himself by destroying the Overlook Hotel.

Dick Halloran becomes a father like figure to Danny and continues to teach Danny about The Shining and he also returns in Stephen King’s novel Doctor Sleep.
